Das Album ging im Januar 1980 auf Nummer 1 der Billboard Album Charts und verblieb bis im Mai in dieser Position. Es erhielt mit seinen 11,5 Millionen Verkäufen fantastische 23 × Platinum (weil es ein Doppelalbum war und Doppelalben bei einem Verkauf doppelt zählten).
The Wall wurde mit der aufwändigsten Bühnenshow der Rock-Geschichte auf Tournee gebracht: 80 Personen Road Crew, so dass allein das Bereitstellen von Bühne und Stadion 1 Million Dollar pro Show kostete. Während der Show wurde eine Mauer aus 400 Polystyrol Steinen um die Band herum gebaut, die am Ende explodierte, ein Spitfire Flugzeug flog über die Bühne, bombardierte die Szene und zerschellte an der Hinterwand der Bühne, 12 Meter hohe aufblasbare Figuren («inflatables») erweiterten die Szene sowie eine Lichtshow und Trickfilm-Einspielungen. Die Musik wurde über ein Quarophonisches PA gespielt, das es erlaubte klänge im Raum zu bewegen. The Wall war das grösste, aufwändigste und eindrucksvollste Spektakel, das die Rock Musik hervorgebracht hat.
Vor allem war die Show zu aufwändig, um sie an vielen Orten zu inszenieren. Sie startete am 7. Februar 1980 in der Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena (fünf Konzerte), ging danach nach New York, London und Köln.
Während dieser Tour brachen Pink Floyd auseinander. Rick Wright verliess die Band bereits im Studio bei den Aufnahmen zum Album. Er spielte die Show als bezahlter Musiker. Das Unternehmen, The Wall auf diese Weise auf die Bühne zu bringen, erwies sich als defizitär: £400,000 Miese. Rick Wright war ironischerweise der einzige ehemalige Floyd, der mit der Tour Geld verdiente.
