Die erste Single des Quartetts, die im englischsprachigen Musikmarkt (UK, AUS) unter dem Namen Abba herauskam. In den germanischen Ländern (S, N, NL, D) hiessen sie noch wie ein Jahr zuvor mit People Need Love und «He Is Your Brother» Björn Benny And Agnetha Frida. Das schwedische Original wurde mit Hilfe der beiden Brill-Building-Songwriter Neil Sedaka und Phil Cody ins Englische übersetzt. Hier darf man annehmen, dass vor allem Cody, der Lyriker des Duos involviert war, nicht so sehr Sedaka. Eine Interpretation von Sedaka, die man nicht gehört haben muss, gibt es bei einem Heim-Konzert während der Covid Pandemie.
Der Studiotechniker Michael B. Tretow, dem als Fan von Phil Spector eine Wall Of Sound Produktion vorschwebte, hatte das Geld nicht, um im Studio hundert Musiker*innen zu versammeln. So half er sich mit der Idee, die Band doppelt aufzunehmen, wobei er die Instrumente auf verschiedenen Bandgeschwindigkeiten und leicht verstimmt aufnahm, was dem Endprodukt eine laute und dichte Präsenz gab. Diese Art, im Studio zu arbeiten, war damals neu, eine geniale Variante des Aufnahmeverfahrens, das Geoff Emerick und andere zehn Jahre zuvor in den EMI Studios für die Beatles entwickelt hatten.
Eurovisions Misserfolg
«Ring Ring» wurde als Beitrag zum Eurovision Song Contest von 1973 geschrieben. Die vier künftigen Abbas nahmen an der nationalen Vorausscheidung, dem Melodifestivalen teil und wurden nur dritte. Gewonnen haben Malts mit ihrem Lied «Sommaren som aldrig säger nej». Am internationalen Wettbewerb traten Malta unter dem Namen The Nova and The Dolls mit einer englischen Version des Lieds auf («You're Summer»). Der Song wurde in Luxembourg fünfter.
