Diese Compilation vom Cherry Red Label hat Synth-Musik aus dem Jahr 1980 zusammengetragen. Ihr Kurator, Mat Smith, bezeichnet dieses Jahr als «Year Zero» von Synthpop. Das heisst allerdings nicht, dass es vorher keine von Synthis diktierte Popmusik gegeben hätte. Jede Geschichte hat ihre Vorgeschichte und zu dieser Vorgeschichte gehören Bands wie Kraftwerk aus Düsseldorf oder Human League aus Sheffield. Mit gutem Recht könnte man auch 1978 oder 1979 als Geburtsjahr oder «Year Zero» von Synthpop bezeichnen. 1978 brachte Being Boiled und 1979 die beiden UK-Top-Hits Are Friends Electric? und Video Killed The Radio Star – damals zwei Novelty-Hits, die ahnen liessen, dass mit Synthis eine neue Musik möglich war. Zweifelhaft ist, ob sich mit Musik aus diesen Jahren eine Box mit drei CDs füllen liess. Eine Compilation, die frühe Synth-Musik enthält, ist Close To the Noise Floor mit frühen Acts wie Zorch (1975!) enthält, Trobbing Gristle, Blah Blah Blah (Minimalsynth), Renaldo And The Loaf, Storm Bugs, British Standard Unit, Gerry And The Holograms (Artrock), John Foxx, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark und Human League. Es fehlen Cabaret Voltaire. Die wenigsten dieser Bands lassen sich indes sinnvoll als Synthpop bezeichnen. Diese Artrock-, Minimalsynth- und Industrial-Bands waren schlicht keine Pop-Acts.
Auch diese drei CDs enthalten noch allerlei Musik, die noch das Material für eine Vorgeschichte von Synthpop bilden. Wir hören Bands, die sich 1980 noch in der Formierungsphase befinden und ihre grossen Hits sie ein oder zwei Jahre später landeten (Ultravox oder Human League). Auch «Musik Music Musique. 1980 | The Dawn of Synth Pop» greift auf Sounds zu, die zum einen noch in Postpunk-Experimenten und zum anderen im Art- und Progrock wurzeln. Erstere sind folglich wenig kommerziell.
Kommerziell erfolgreich waren Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime von den Korgis (Platz 3) und Fade To Gray von Visage (Platz 8 im UK, Top-Hit in der Schweiz und in Deutschland). Um Top-Plätze zu errechen, wäre diese Musik besser bei Major-Labels herausgekommen. Aber diese Titel werden fast ausnahmslos von Indie-Labels veröffentlicht, z.B. von Virgin (und seinem Sublabel DinDisc) oder von Mute. Ausnahmen gibt es auch hier, z.B. die Berlin Blondes, die bei EMI unter Vertrag waren.

Die Compilation hat Nachfolgerinnen, die unter dem Titel «Musik Music Musique» eine Reihe bilden: 1981 | The Rise Of Synth Pop und 1982 | Synth Pop on the Air.
