Der Arbeitstitel des Albums lautete: «The Two Americas». Es ging um Mythos und Realität, Hoffnung und Verzweiflung, den Kontrast zwischen dem Amerika John F. Kennedys und demjenigen Ronald Reagans. U2 aus Irland, die als Postpunk-Band startete und Schritt um Schritt zur Stadionrock-Band heranwuchs, war nun ambitioniert, den amerikanischen Musikmarkt zu erobern, we es die Beatles etwas mehr als 20 Jahre zuvor gemacht haben.
In die Produktion dieses Albums waren ein paar der wichtigsten Künstler der 1980er Jahre involviert: U2, der Alternative-Mainstream-Crossover Act, der zu weltweitem Erfolg ansetzte, Brian Eno und Daniel Lanois, die visionärsten Produzenten zu jener Zeit sowie Anton Corbijn, der für die Visuals zuständig war. So wurde «The Joshua Tree» ein Top-Hit in vielen Ländern, zumal in den USA und ultimativ ein Klassiker.
