Dino Valenti schrieb diesen Song über die universelle Brüderlichkeit der Menschen 1964, nahm das Lied selbst auf, allerdings ohne es zu veröffentlichen. Nachdem das Kingston Trio den Song regelmässig an ihren Konzerten sang, wurde Get Together
ausgehend von San Francisco zu so etwas wie einem Folk-/Rock-Standard. Die Version der Eastcoast-Folkrocker Youngbloods war im Januar 1967 auf ihrem ersten Album zu finden und wurde im August als Single ausgekoppelt. Diese Single schaffte es zunächst nicht, mehr als eine kleiner Hit für die Gruppe zu sein. Er wurde aber von der National Conference of Christians and Jews in einer Kampagne für die Brüderschaft von Christen und Juden verwendet. 1969 wurde die Single noch einmal aufgelegt und erreichte die Top Ten der Billboard Charts. in Filmen auf wie Forrest Gump
oder Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
. Seine Eingangszeilen «Love is but a song to sing» wurden in leicht abgeänderter Form zum Titel des San Francisco Nuggets Samplers von Rhino Records. Heute gehört der Song in der Interpretation der Youngbloods zum Bestand der wichtigsten musikalischen Zeitzeugnisse der Hippie-Generation.
Es ist eines der wunderschönsten Folkrock-Stücke. Das liquide Spiel der Leadgitarre wirkt schwerelos und doch dicht. Die Stimme ist äusserst gefühlvoll, zart und bestimmt zugleich. Mit dem Kopfhörer hört man einen der Musiker die Gitarrenlinie mitsingen. Der Song ist kraftvoll aber bescheiden, wie AllMusic-Rezensent Richie Unterberger schreibt. Get Together
a ist ein Song, für den ich meinen Glauben wechseln würde: Die universelle Brüderlichkeit muss doch möglich sein, wenigstens während diesen viereinhalb Minuten.
