Als dieser Song aufgenommen wurde, klang er etwas konventionell. Brian Eno schlug deshalb vor, einige Instrumente bei bestimmten Tönen zu Unterdrücken. Auf diese Weise kam mehr «Luft» in die Aufnahme. David Byrne spielte grunzende Koalas ab Band ein - diese Tiere sind ja von den Kolablättern, die sie essen, dauernd berauscht. Byrne joggte im Gebäude herum, bevor er die Gesangsaufnahmen machte, damit seine Stimme ausser Atem klang. Alle diese Ideen machen den Song zu etwas Unkonventionellem. Drugs
war das Resultat davon, dass die Band und ihr Produzent das Studio als ein Werkzeug der Komposition verwendeten (siehe: David Byrne: How Music Works, p. 148).
