Der Chefregisseur des Nashville-Sounds, Chet Atkins, wendet hier jeden Trick aus seiner Zauberkiste an: Streichinstrumente, polierte Stimmen und der radikale Verzicht auf Country-Klischees wie Fiddel, Banjo und «Hey-Ho».
«The End of the World» kam in den Billboard Hot 100 auf Platz 2, ebenfalls in den Country-Charts, Platz 4 in den R&B-Charts und Platz 1 in den Easy Listening Charts. Damit war der Titel der erste, der in allen diesen Charts reüssierte.
Der Platz 1 in den Easy Listening Charts von einem Teenager-Schlager mag erstaunen, ist aber möglicherweise darauf zurückzuführen, dass der Song ein universelles Gefühl des Erstaunens anspricht: Wie kann die Welt sich weiterdrehen, wenn sich doch eine Katastrophe ereignet hat? – Die Lyrikerin Sylvia Dee habe den Song nach dem Tod ihres Vaters geschrieben.
