Der Songtitel ist dem Verse, statt dem Chorus entnommen. Die Lyrics sind mehrdeutig, um nicht zu sagen obskur. Young hat sie im hohen Fieber geschrieben. Eine misogyne Note ist dem Song nicht abzusprechen. Aber da man nicht weiss, worum es genau geht, läuft auch eine Kritik leer.
Der Songtitel spielt vermutlich auf die Hippie Youth Migration nach Kalifornien, spoeziell nach Los Angeles an. Viele der vermeintlichen «California Girls» waren eigentlich aus dem Midwest zugewandert, eben Cowgirls, die sich jetzt am Sandstrand vergnügen.
