Songstruktur
Die Elektropopo-Nummer ist interessant gemacht. Strukturelle Erwartungen werden laufend unterwandert, Dinge verdreht. «You can count on me to misbehave», heisst es im Song über eine verwöhnte Göre, gesungen aus der Ich-Perspektive. Das Intro stellt sich später als der Chorus heraus. Die Sequenz aus Verse – Pre-Chorus – Chorus ist nicht wie üblich in diesem Genre die energetische Steigerung vom Popsong zum exstatischen Dancfloor-Filler, denn der Chorus impoldiert statt zu explodieren. Es fehlt auch der Hook bzw. Popdrop, der nur mit zwei Takten nach dem zweiten Chorus angedeutet wird und dann gleich wieder zur Reprise des Chorus überleitet. Wenn dieser Chorus, der musikalisch mit einer Omnichord-Begleitung beginnt bis eine Gitarre übernimmt, nicht so saugut und eingängig wäre, bestünde «Primadonna» aus einem strukturellen Chaos. So aber haben wir es mit einem seltenen Fall von einem grossartigen Song mit Anti-Chorus zu tun.
