Der Erzähler macht im Club, in dem Comedy geboten wird, eine Frau an und wird vom Clown – eigentlich einem Komödianten – auf der Bühne ausgelacht, weil diese Frau seine Ehefrau ist, was wir erst als Pointe des Songs erfahren. Clowns waren kurz vor 1968 natürlich ein Thema, man denke nur an Bob Dylan, der sich gern als solcher inszeniert hatte. Das Thema Authentizität spielt hier eine grosse Rolle. Die Frau verstellt sich, flirtet, obwohl sie verheiratet ist, der Erzähler, weiss nicht, woran er ist, ist der Getäuschte, der Betrogene, der Clown verkörpert die Wahrheit. Von aussen gesehen, spielen alle ein anderes Spiel. Sie sucht den Flirt, der Erzähler Trost und Selbstbestätigung, der Clown oder Komödiant ist in der Rolle, desjenigen, der zuletzt lacht. Er steht ironisch über den Vorgängen und kann sie sie als menschliche Kommödie kommentieren.
Die sprachliche Gestalt der Strophen ist bemerkenswert: Es sind keine Sätze, sondern aneinander gereihte Nominalphrasen. Sie geben der Erzählung und dem Song Drive.
Der Song wurde 1967 eine Nummer 4 im UK und eine Nummer 1 in vielen europäischen Ländern (Niederlande, Belgien, Norwegen, Deutschland, Österreich).
