Die Teenpop-Sängerin Lesley Gore wurde als Lesley Sue Goldstein in Brooklyn geboren und wuchs in nahen New Jersey auf. Sie spielte von früh auf Klavier und im College (an der Dwight School in Manhattan, Upper West Side) sang sie in der Schülerband, die gelegentlich in Hotels auftrat. Bei einem solchen Auftritt entdeckte sie Quincy Jones, der damals für das Mercury Label als Produzent und Arrangeur arbeitete. Er lud die 16-jährige ein, Probeaufnahmen zu machen. Einer der eingespielten Titel war It’s My Party
, ein Teenager Melodrama über eine Party, die für die Einladende ruiniert wird, weil ihr Freund ihr untreu war. Als das Label Wind bekam, dass die Crystals den Song ebenfalls veröffentlichen wollten, verteilte man die Demoaufnahme an Radiostationen. Das war ein Rush-Release in den 1960er Jahren! Die Single eroberte in etwas mehr als zwei Monaten den Top Spot der Billboard Charts.
In Grossbritannien kam die Single auf Platz 9 der Charts.
