Tom Dooley hiess richtig Tom Dula, lebte in North Carolina und wurde gehängt, weil er möglicherweise im Mai 1966 Laura Foster umgebracht hat. Dula wuchs als Nachbar von den Fosters auf: Anne und ihre beiden Cousinen Laura und Pauline waren etwa gleich alt. Als Kinder spielten sie miteinander. Tom 12 und Anne 14-jährig wurden zusammen im Bett erwischt. Mit 17 wurde Tom in den amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg eingezogen. Der Krieg kostete allen seinen Brüdern das Leben. Er selbst wurde mehrfach verwundet. Am Ende kam er in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Wieder zu Hause fand er, dass Anne mit einem älteren Mann verheiratet war.
Dula spielte Geige und war ein Frauenschwarm. Er hatte ein Verhältnis mit Laura, Annes Cousine, und schwängerte sie. Er versprach sie zu heiraten. Eines Morgens verschwand Laura auf dem Pferd des Vaters und kehrte nie mehr zurück. Hat Tom sie umgebracht? Oder war es die eifersüchtige Anne?
Bei der Gerichtsverhandlung kam aus, dass alle drei Cousinen ein Verhältnis mit Dula hatten. Sie steckten einander mit Syphilis an. Er wurde in zwei Verhandlungen verurteilt und gehängt. Auf dem Schafott noch schwor er, Laura nicht umgebracht zu haben. Anne hingegen beichtete auf dem Totenbett, dass sie es war, die ihre Cousine erstochen habe.
Grayson, der im Song vorkommt, war gar nicht in die Dreiecksgeschichte involviert. Er war Colonel, verhaftete Dula in Tennessee und lieferte ihn nach North Carolina aus.
