Ein in mancher Hinsicht (Tonalität: C-Dur, Akkordfolge, Melodie) simpler Song mit einer einfachen und liebenswerten, um nicht zu sagen populistischen, utopischen Botschaft. Strukturell kommt der Song in einer AABA-Form mit der Bridge (B-Teil) als Reprise. Das Intro leitet in den A-Verse ein und die Coda fehlt, es sei denn, man betrachtet die Reprise als Coda. Arrangiert für Pianobegleitung, Rhythmussektion und Streicher, wobei das Piano mit Doubletracking aufgenommen und die beiden Aufnahmen kanalsepariert abgemischt wurden. John Lennon spielt das Piano, Klaus Voormann spielt Bass, Alan White sitzt am Schlagzeug. Die Streicher kommen von den Flux Fiddlers, die das Arrangement von Torrie Zito spielen. Die «Flux Fiddlers» waren Musiker des New York Philharmonic Orchestras, die von Lennon und Ono mit dem avantgardistisch anmutenden Namen versehen wurden – «Flux» kurz für Fluxus.
Der simple Song zeigt, worum es John Lennon nach dem Breakup der Beatles gegangen ist: «Back to the Roots», was in diesem Fall solides Brill-Building-Songwrting heisst, an anderer Stelle Rock 'n' Roll. Auch Ringo Starr gehörte eher ins Lager der Nostalgiker. George Harrison setzte eher auf Kontinuität und machte dort weiter, wo er am Ende mit der Band stand. Auch Paul McCartney machte weiter, zeigte sich anfangs orientierungslos, ausser dass er konsequent seine umfassenden Skills als Songwriter, Musiker und Produzent auslebte und mit Autonomie bestach («Who needs a band when there's none?»). Wenn man es im Nachhinein bedenkt: Keine dieser Strategien haben entfernt an das angeschlossen, was die Beatles waren und bedeuteten.
