Annotationen
«4'33''» ist ein Stück für Klavier. Die Anregung, es zu schreiben, kam John Cage, als er im Black Mountain College bei einer Performance von «Theatre Piece No. 1» die «White Paintings» von Robert Rauschenberg gesehen hatte.
Uraufgeführt wurde das Stück in der Maverick Concert Hall, einer Freiluftbühne in Woodstock am 29. August 1952. Es «spielte» David Tudor.
Cage sagte über sein berühmtes Stück: «You could hear the wind stirring outside during the first movement. During the second, raindrops began pattering on the roof [which was made of corrugated metal], and during the third the people themselves made all kinds of interesting sounds as they talked or walked out.»
