Justin Bieber in der Umbruchphase: mit 21 Jahren ist er kein Teen-Star mehr und baut seine Karriere als Popstar für Erwachsene auf. Zum Portfolio des gegenwärtigen Popstars gehört Electropop. Auf «Where Are Ü Now» leiht das kanadische Stimmwunder dem Produzentenpaar Diplo und Skrillex seine Stimme.
Entstehungsgeschichte
Biebers Manager sandte ein Soundfile mit dem Fragment einer Pianoballade auf Diplos Mobiltelefon. Dieser und Skrillex machten aus dem Fragment ein technisches Wunderwerk, einen Song, der sich wie aus der Zukunft anhört. Die ursprünglichen Songlines wurden rearrangiert, die Stimme wurde transponiert, zu «Ghostvoices» verarbeitet, die mit Bieber interagieren, aber auch zu neuen ganz anders klingenden Sounds verarbeitet. Die instrumentale Delphin-Hookline zum Beispiel ist aus Biebers Stimme entstanden. Softwaretechnisch kann man aus jedem Sound jeden beliebigen anderen Sound erzeugen. Diese Platinum-Single ist der Showcase einer Hitproduktion in der Mitte der 2010er Jahre.
Struktur
Als Songfragment hatte «Where Are Ü Now» keinen Chorus und bestand nur aus Zeilen, die sich wie Verses anhörten. Die Titelzeile «Where Are You Now That I Need You» erhielt daher den Status eines Refrains. Die Zeile «I Need You The Most» entstammt offensichtlich nicht dem Fragment, vielleicht wurde sie später aufgenommen, um dem Song ein weiteres Element zufügen zu können. Aus «I Need You The Most» wurde das Intro, ein Zwischenspiel und die Coda. Der Verse und die Refrain-Zeile bilden den klassischsten Teil dieses Songs, sozusagen das «Song-hafte am Track».
Zweifellos kann man die Songstruktur von «Where Are Ü Now» verschieden auslegen. Zum Beispiel kann man von der Entstehungsgeschichte ausgehen und daran festhalten, dass der Song keinen Chorus enthält. Anstelle eines Chorus findet man einen Drop mit dem besagten «whale sound» und der Refrainzeile. Der Drop wird beim ersten Mal mit einem Pre-Chorus aufgebaut, beim zweiten Mal mit einem Pre-Chorus und einem Zwischenspiel. Ich nenne diesen Formteil «Zwischenspiel/«interlude», weil es die Zeile aus dem Intro aufnimmt.
Erfolg
«Where Are Ü Now» kam in den Billboard Hot 100 auf Platz 8, in Kanada auf Platz 5, in Australien auf 3, in Neuseeland auf 3. Bei den Grammys von 2016 gewann der Song in der Kategorie «Best Dance Recording».
Die Hitparaden reagierten weniger gut auf den Song als die Popkritik. «Where Are Ü Now» war einer jener Songs, über die viel geschrieben und nachgedacht wurde. Vor allem das eindrucksvoll produzierte Video-Feature der New York Times hat die Popularität des Songs enorm gesteigert – vor allem bei einem Publikum, das Justin Bieber oder EDM bisher ignoriert hat.
