Im Song geht es um die Ambivalenz der Schwangerschaft, um die widersprüchlichen Emotionen zwischen Angst und Stolz. Einerseits will die Erzählerin eine Mutter sein, weil es ihre Bestimmung (sex) und gesellschaftliche Rolle (gender) als Frau ist. Dann zeigt sich ihr auch diese ängstliche Seite. Halsey schrieb den Song zusammen mit Hit-Garant Greg Kurstin und liess ihn – wie ihr Album If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power – von den beiden Nine Inch Nails Musikern Trent Reznor und Atticus Ross produzieren, die hier über 30 Gitarren verwenden, um einen massiven Shoegaze-Sound zu erzeugen.
Strukturell ist «You Asked For This» eine Verse-Chorus-Bridge Form, wobei die Bridge direkt in die Coda überleitet. Verse und Chorus repräsentieren die ambivalenten Gefühle der schwangeren Erzählerin. In der Bridge kommt ihr «Mission Statement» als Popstar: Sieben Willensbekundungen, was Halsey, die popkulturelle Figur sein will: Ein Wesen am Rand des Absturzes, verwöhnt, atttraktiv, eine Heldin unter Antihelden.
