Dass eine britische Band einen deutschen Namen hat, gilt als äusserst cool. Dieser Hang zum Germanischen kommt daher, dass Franz Ferdinand eine Postpunkrevival-Band ist. Postpunk orientierte sich ursprünglich an der kühlen Ästhetik deutscher Bands wie Kraftwerk. Nun ist es aber ein Missverständnis, dass mit dem Bandnamen der Österreichische Erzherzog und Thronfolger gemeint ist, durch desssen Ermordung der erste Weltkrieg seinen Anfang nahm. Der Ursprung des Namens ist doch britischer als vermutet: «The Archduke Ferdinand» hiess das Rennpferd, das 2001 das Norththumberland Plate, das vielleicht bekannteste nordenglische Pferderennen, gewann.
