Dick James, bürgerlich Leon Isaac Vapnick, Sohn polnisch-jüdischer Einwanderer in London war Sänger in Swing Bands (u.a. Henry Hall and His Orchestra), sang in den 1950er Jahren mit den Stargazers und als Solo-Act. Als Solosänger arbeitete er mit Produzent George Martin und war bei Parlophone unter Vertrag.
Im Anschluss an die eigene Karriere als Sänger wurde er als Manager von Northern Songs der britische Verleger der Beatles. Er war wesentlich in die Promotion der Band im Vereinigten Königreich involviert, verschaffte ihr den ersten TV-Auftritt in «Thank Your Lucky Stars», der mit für den Erfolg von Please Please Me verantwortlich war und damit für den Durchbruch der Band auf dem britischen Markt. Dick James hatte die Kontakte, die der Beatles Manager Brian Epstein als Neuling im Geschäft nicht hatte. Dick James war erfolgshungrig, wie George Martin in seinen Memoiren schrieb, er war gerade dabei, seinen eigenen Verlag zu etablieren und brauchte diese Nummer 1 der Beatles.
