Der Song ist der erste Teil der Suite: «Sweet Thing / Candidate / Sweet Thing (Reprise)». Alles in allem ist diese Suite eine ziemlich unförmige Sache: Es gibt nicht viel, woran man sich halten könnte. Die (vorläufige) Lehre daraus: Experimentier mit freier Lyrik, dann lass die musikalische Struktur ihr den Rahmen bilden, experimentier mit Strukturen, aber dann lass die Lyrics verständlich. Bowies Suite ist letztlich nur anstrengend. Und man weiss nicht warum.
Die cut up lyrics stammen offensichtlich aus Texten, die Bowie für «1984» geschrieben hat, es geht aber auch um Drogen (in der Reprise), um Sex bis zur Erschöpfung (in Candidate).
