Dies ist die erste Single der Crickets. Der Titel des Songs stammt aus dem Western The Searchers, wo John Wayne in einer Auseinandersetzung auf den Satz: «I hope you die!» schlagfertig mit «That'll Be The Day» reagiert.
Struktur
Der Song ist formal ungewöhnlich aufgebaut: Intro-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Interlude-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Coda (ABACABA). Man beachte dabei den symmetrischen Aufbau. Historisch steht er eher in der Tradition von AABA- als von Verse-Chorus-Songs, weil der A-Teil die Titelzeile enthält und der B-Teil kein Chorus ist. Der instrumentale Mittelteil ist wie die Vorform der Bridge einer Verse-Chorus-Bridge Form, aber in einer anderen strukturellen Konstellation.
Einflussbeziehungen
Dieser Song könnte einen Einfluss auf die Beatles gehabt haben. Als Quarrymen haben sie die Nummer 1958 gecovert. Die Namensgebung der beiden Gruppen ist verwandt: «Crickets», «Beatles». Die Crickets haben nach dem Tod von Buddy Holly weitergemacht und z.B. 1964 die LP California Sun - She Loves You veröffentlicht, auf der sie nicht weniger als fünf Lennon-McCartney-Kompositionen covern. Gerade dieser Song könnte Pate gestanden haben bei der Entwicklung der Beatles-Contrasting-Verse-Chorus Form.
Die beiden Gruppen spielen ein transatlantisches Ping-Pong, indem die eine die andere covert und diese wiederum von der anderen gecovert wird. Die erste Bewegung macht möglich, dass die britische Gruppe von der amerikanischen lernt. Die zweite Bewegung findet statt, weil die amerikanische Gruppe ihren Hit-Songwriter bei einem Flugzeigabsturz verloren hat. Wäre Buddy Holly nicht verunfallt, hätte er möglicherweise einige der Innovationen vorweggenommen, die später die Beatles vollzogen haben. Die Musikgeschichte wäre möglicherweise eine andere gewesen.
