Annotationen

Viele Balladen kamen aus England in die Appalachen. Das ist hier offensichtlich, da die Erzählung am Meer spielt. Die Erzählerin beobachtet eine junge Frau von höherem Stand, die bei rauhem Wetter an der Küste ihrem Liebsten nachweint, der zur See ging und nicht zurückkehrt. Wir wissen nicht, ob er verstorben ist oder ob er sie verlassen hat. Sie nunbeschliesst dass sie enttäuscht von der Liebe nie heiraten wird (Chorus). Nicht nur ein Bisschen ambivalent sind Andeutungen, dass sie ins Wasser geht:
