«It's All Too Much» wurde zur Zeit der Produktion des Sgt. pepper Albums in den De Lane Lea Studios aufgenommen – zu spät allerdings, um auf das Album zu kommen. Der Plan war dann, ihn im Yellow Submarine (Film) als Schlusstrack zu verwenden. Tatsächlich ist er im Film zu hören, aber in einer anderen Version, kürzer und mit abweichenden Lyrics! Veröffentlicht wurde er auf dem Film-Soundtrack anfangs 1969. Durch die Verschiebung und den relativ späten Release wurde dieser psychedelische Song zu einem der obskureren Beatles-Songs.
Eine Hommage an Patti, George Harrisons Ehefrau. Vielleicht hat sie den Satz nach einem LSD-Trip gesprochen. Die undeutlichen Eingangszeilen von John Lennon könnten «Too Your Muff!» lauten, was Slang ist für «Too Your Woman». Der Text mag eine Hommage an Patti Harrison sein, die Musik ist eine an Jimmy Hendrix, den die Beatles live gehört haben. Das Debut-Album Are You Experienced? war noch nicht veröffentlicht, als «Too Much» aufgneommen wurde.
Der Satz «Show me that I'm everywhere, and get me home for tea» mokiert sich über die ambivalente britische Mentalität, sich auf der einen Seite weltmännisch zu geben und auf der anderen Seite an den eigenen Traditionen fest zu halten.
