Bob Geldof las über die Hungersnot in Äthiopien und wollte helfen. Er schrieb die Lyrics zu diesem Song. Da seine Band Boomtown Rats gerade auseinander fiel, sprach er mit Midge Ure von Ultravox, den er in «The Tube», einer TV-Sendung von Channel 4 traf. Diese wurde von Paula Yates, Geldofs künftiger Ehefrau, präsentiert und Ultravox traten in der Show auf.
Die Single wurde am 25. November 1984 gratis in den Sarm West Studio von Trevor Horn in Notting Hill aufgenommen und drei Tage später veröffentlicht. Die Single ging unmittelbar auf Platz 1 der Charts – sie war die bis dahin am schnellsten abgesetzte Single der Popgeschichte. Sie wurde in der ersten Woche 1 Million mal verkauft!
