Aufgenommen wurde der Track zeitgleich mit Fernando. Eine Nonalbum-Single war der Gruppe genug und so musste die Veröffentlichung ein Jahr warten. Das macht «Dancing Queen» zu einem wirklich frühen Europop-Track. Nur wenige Acts waren vor Abba: Love To Love You Baby, 1975) oder Silver Convention!
Noch bevor die Single herauskam, führten Abba «Dancing Queen» am 18. Juni 1976 bei den Hochzeitsfeierlichkeiten für das schwedische Königspaar Silvia und Gustaf XVI auf (siehe: Aufzeichnung).
Entstehungsgeschichte
Der Arbeitstitel des Tracks hiess «Boogaloo» und dieser war stark von Rock Your Baby von George McCrae beeinflusst – ein massiver Crossover-Hit von 1974 in Europa. Ein weiterer Einfluss soll Dr. Johns Gumbo gewesen sein – damit sind das vor allem Karibische Rhythmen. Boogaloo hiess ein Musikstil (Rhythm & Blues mit afrokaribischen Rhythmen) aus New York, der am Ende der 1960er Jahre populär war. Der Rhythmustrack von «Boogalo» ist auf Vimeo greifbar.
Erfolg
«Dancing Queen» war die einzige Single von Abba, die in den USA auf Platz 1 ging. Ebenfalls auf den Spitzenplatz kam die Single im UK, in Schweden, Deutschland, Irland, den Niederlanden, Norwegen, Brasilien, Mexiko, Rhodesien, Südafrika, Australien und Neuseeland. Eigenartigerweise schaffte sie in der Schweiz nur Platz 3 und Österreich Platz 4.
