Lyrics
Der Song ist sehr verbatim und erzählerisch. Chuck Berry wurde wegen Songs wie diesem auch der «Shakespeare of Rock 'n' Roll» genannt. Die fünf Verses geben Alltagssituationen eines Teenagers wieder: Während der Schule, während der Mittagspause, Schulschluss, im Kaffee, wo man sich bei der Jukebox versammelt, und schliesslich als Höhepunkt eine Ode an den Rock 'n' Roll. «School Day» dokumentiert den Schulalltag amerikanischer Teenager ca. 1957. In den 1950er Jahren waren amerikanische Schulen noch seggregiert. Der Song vermeidet es bis zum Ende des dritten Verses, präzis zu sein, wo diese Szenen spielen, ob an einer Schule für weisse oder afroamerikanische Kids. Dann fallen zwei Wörter, die interessanterweise jeweils andere rassische Zuschreibungen erlauben. «Juke Joint» spielt an die Welt der Afroamerikaner*innen im Süden der USA an und das Hauptthema «Rock 'n' Roll» verrät, dass Weisse gemeint sind, denn Afroamerikaner*innen würden Rhythm 'n' Blues hören statt Rock 'n' Roll. Einmal schwarz und einmal weiss – für den Schulalltag macht es wohl keinen grossen Unterschied. Der Song bleibt am Ende ambivalent.
Der erste Verse spricht davon, wie die Schule schon ein Leistungswettbewerb ist (man gibt sich Mühe und will Prüfungen bestehen, ob der Stoff interessiert oder nicht), wie sie diszipliniert (man muss am Morgen aufstehen) und wie es unter Peers bereits zu Sticheleien und Konflikten kommt. Im zweiten Verse spricht der Song von zu wenig Sitzplätzen in der Cafeteria oder Mensa, was ein Bild der Gesellschaft ist: Es wird ein Wettbewerb um die Sonnenplätze veranstaltet. Es gibt Gewinner und Verlierer. Zurück im Klassenzimmer mit einer Lehrerin oder einem Lehrer, die statt wohlwollend und freundlich einfach nur fies ausschaut und gewiss auch so ist. Im dritten Verse ist Schulschluss und der Erzähler geht in einen juke joint». Ein «juke joint» ist ein Lokal in einer einfachen Behausung, wo es Alkohol, Spiel, Musik und Prostitution gab. Im vierten Verse befinden sich Erzähler und Hörer*innen in der antidotischen Gegenwelt zur Schule. Die Jukebox spielt Rock 'n' Roll und man tanzt dazu. In dieser Gegenwelt gibt es Gefühle, Körperlichkeit, Geschlechtlichkeit. Der Song vermeidet es zu sagen, dass auch diese Welt von Konkurrenz und Verteilkampf beherrscht ist. Nur dass die Jukebox Geld kostet, wird deutlich gesagt. Beachten Sie auch, wie der Weg in diese Gegenwelt beschrieben ist: «Up to the corner and 'round the bend». Das ist eine Abbiegung, ein Abweg, kein gerader Weg. Der gesellschaftliche Gegensatz von Schule und Juke Joint ist geprägt von der Differenz zwischen Ernst und Spass, Arbeit und Freizeit, Rationalität und Emotion, erwachsen sein und Schüler sein. Im Song von Chuck Berry fragt man sich, ob hier wirklich ein «juke joint» gemeint ist oder nicht vielmehr eine Kneipe für musikliebende Mittelstandskids, die sich so nennt oder die die Schüler*innen so nennen, weil es cool ist und dem eigentlich ganz profanen Ort eine mächtige Prise Abenteuer verleiht.
Der letzte Verse steht heraus, ist der Höhepunkt. Nun kommt ein anderes sprachliches Register, das man aus Hymnen und Oden kennt: «Hail, hail». Es ist nicht das deutsche «Heil», dass sich die Nazis zugeworfen haben, sondern ein neues Heil. Es heisst: «Deliver me from the days of old». Der Rock 'n' Roll ist eine lustvolle Gegenwelt, der Ausgang des Menschen aus seiner selbstverschuldeten Unkörperlichkeit. In dieser Gegenwelt gibt es grenzenlosen Spass, wilde Abenteuer und Ganzheitlichkeit (ein Wort, das man erst viel später gebraucht hat): «Body and Soul».
Musik
Berry verwendet in seinem Gitarrenspiel absteigende pentatonische Töne, die er mit zwei Saiten spielt (engl. «descending pentatonic double-stops») – siehe BREAK OUT of the Pentatonic with Double Stops
Erfolg
In den Top 100, wie die späteren «Hot 100» damals noch hiessen, kam «School Days» auf Platz 5. Das war der dritterfolgreichste Titel Berrys. In den Rhythm and Blues Charts, die damals «R&B Best Sellers chart» hiess, war es ein Top-Hit. Im UK kam der Song auf Platz 24.

In Tupelo, einer flächenmässig grossen, aber zerstreut wirkenden nicht hübschen Stadt, kam 1935 Elvis Presley als Sohn von Vernon und Gladys Presley auf die Welt und verbrachte seine ersten 13 Jahre in ärmlichen Verhältnissen. Elvis wurde gefördert durch die liebende Mutter (sie kaufte dem Jungen eine Gitarre als er ein Spielzeug-Gewehr wollte) und seine Familie gehörte der örtlichen Pfingstgemeinde an. Die Gitarre und die Kirche sind die einzigen Hinweise auf das, was ab 1955 aus Elvis Presley werden wird: der King of Rock 'n' Roll, ein Megastar seiner Generation.

Die Stadt präsentiert das Geburtshaus und die Kapelle der Christgemeindler, der die Familie angehörte. Das Geburtshaus ist ein Shotgun Shack, das war der billigste Wohnraum für Arbeiter in Vorstädten des Südens. Diese Häuser haben zwei, selten mehr Zimmer, die direkt miteinander verbunden sind. Sie fühlen sich fast an wie ein Wohnwagen. Strom, Wasser, damit sanitäre Anlagen, sind nicht inbegriffen. Dafür gibt es die Outhouses. Die für die musikalische Entwicklung des Königs wichtige Kapelle, die nichts anderes als ein grosses Shotgun Shack ist, musste ein paar Fuss hügelaufwärts transportiert werden. Es soll aber die originale Kapelle sein. Das Presley-Haus enthält Mobiliar aus der Zeit. 
Die Familie hatte es schwer: Ein Zwillingsbruder von Elvis starb bei der Geburt, das Haus überstand einen schrecklichen Tornado knapp und Vater Vernon war zwei Jahre wegen einer Trickserei mit Checks im Gefängnis. Auf Tafeln erinnern sich Schulfreunde an eine nicht aussergewöhnliche Jugend mit dem späteren Star. In der Kapelle gibt es eine aufschlussreiche Präsentation, wofür sich der Besuch richtig lohnt. Auf drei Screens werden Ausschnitte aus einer Messe nachgestellt, wie sie für die «Pentecostal Church» typisch war. Viel gemeinsames Singen, viel zelebrierte Gemeinschaft. Die Pfingstgemeindler glauben an den Heiligen Geist und an die Heilung durch ihn. Sie legen einander die Hände auf, sie singen miteinander lautstark und in «close harmony» Lieder. Elvis hatte hier seine ersten Auftritte als Sänger und ein Publikum, hier entdeckte er die Liebe zur Musik, die von der Mutter nach leibeskräften gefördert wird.
Es wird dem Besucher eine ganz normale Kindheit in extremer Armut präsentiert.
Die ärmlichen Verhältnisse rühren mich an, wie schon bei Rick Hall. Diese Leute haben wirklich den Amerikanischen Traum verwirklicht und sind den Weg von «rags to riches» gegangen. Ihren Antrieb und ihre Entschiedenheit zogen sie aus den demütigenden Erfahrungen als Kinder. Und Amerika bot ihnen tatsächlich eine Chance, die sie in der Klassengesellschaft Europas kaum gehabt hätten.
Die ganze Anlage ist wie der Name Elvis Presley eine riesige Cashcow. Es erstaunt mich, wie skalpellschnitthaft die Biografie 1948 abbricht, das ist die Zeit, als die Familie nach Memphis weiterzieht. Tupelo will Memphis, so scheint es, nicht die Show stehlen. Und die echten Pop-Pilgerer werden ja auch noch das 110 Meilen entfernte Memphis besuchen ...

Von vielleicht wichtigsten Rock-Schriftsteller kommt ein neues Buch mit dem Titel: «The History Of Rock And Roll In Ten Songs». Dass einer die reiche Geschichte des Rock and Roll, d.i. die amerikanisch-stämmige Populäre Musik, in nur zehn Songs erzählen möchte, klingt etwas vermessen. Aber wenn es sich um Greil Marcus handelt, dann nehmen wir das ernst. Wenn jemand eine Essenz der Rockmusik in zehn Stücken zu erfassen vermag, dann ist das er.

Rock Journalismus Tag
Ab den späten 1960er-Jahren wurden eine Reihe von auf Rockmusik spezialisierten Musik Magazinen gegründet, vor allem der Rolling Stone aus San Francisco (ab 1967) und Creem aus Detroit (ab 1969).
Rock Journalismus trat von Anfang an gegen die Tagespresse an, die gar nicht über Rockmusik schrieb oder wenn nur negativ («Lärm»). Rock Journalismus kam mit der Rock Musik zusammen auf und steckt heute in den letzten Zügen. Etablierte Rock Magazine wie Rolling Stone, NME usw. gehen ein oder werden verkauft. Der USP ist heute nicht mehr ersichtlich, da die Tagespresse Pop in ihrem Kulturteil abdeckt. Der Anfang davon geht in Europa vermutlich auf den Britpop der 1990er Jahre zurück.

Zu den frühen Rock-Journalisten gehören Al Aronowitz (an der Ostküste) und Ralph Gleason (an der Westküste). Aronowitz schrieb 1959 eine zwölfteilige Serie über die Beats für die New York Post. Er wurde ein Freund von Allen Ginsberg und Jack Keruac. Diese Identifikation mit den Personen, über die er schrieb, machte ihn zum vielleicht ersten Vertreter des New Journalism.
