Das sechste Album von Queen wurde in nur etwa zwei Monaten in den Sarm West und den Wessex Sound Studios zwischen zwei Tourneen aufgenommen. In den letztgenannten Wessex Sound Studios arbeiteten zur selben Zeit auch die Sex Pistils an Never Mind The Bollocks. «News of the World» präsentiert die Band wesentlich anders als die beiden Vorgänger-Alben A Night At The Opera und A Day At The Races. Die Vaudeville-Elemente werden reduziert, Brian Mays progressive Eskapaden ebenso, dafür treten Arenarock (We Will Rock You und We Are the Champions), Powerballaden («Spread Your Wings», «It's Late») und eine neue Agressivität (Sheer Heart Attack
, «Fight From the Inside») in den Vordergrund. Mit letzterem folgte die Band dem Zeitgeist, d.h. dem Punk.
