Dieses Album ist die Antwort auf Rubber Soul von den Beatles. Brian Wilson hörte nach einem psychischen Zusammenbruch auf, mit den Beach Boys zu touren und verschanzte sich im Studio, wo er die Songs zu Pet Sounds
zum grossen Teil mit Studiomusikern einspielte. Vor solchen Releases wie Rubber Soul, Pet Sounds
, Revolver oder Sgt. Pepper bestanden Alben in der Regel lediglich aus zwei bis vier Singles plus Füllmaterial. Die genannten Alben setzten einen neuen Standard in der Pop- bzw. Rockmusik: Von nun an mussten Alben mit der selben Aufmerksamkeit produziert werden wie Singles.
