Musikalisch waren die Ravens nicht viel mehr als eine Anlehnung an den Sound der Mills Brothers, die seit den 30er Jahren im nationalen Popmarkt erfolgreich waren. Doch die Gruppe löste eine Welle von säkularen Vocalensembles aus. Speziell an ihnen war, dass die Bassstimme von Jimmy 'Ricky' Ricks Lead sang. Beim National Label von Herb Abramson (bei dem der Atomphysiker Tom Dowd als Produzent tätig war, brachten die Ravens 1948 acht Titel heraus, von denen die meisten die Top 10 der R&B-Charts schafften.
Die meisten der Gruppen, die in den nächsten Monaten auf die Ravens folgten, trugen Vogel-Namen: z.B. die Orioles, die Robins oder die Crows.
