Der Titel inszeniert ein offenes Fenster, durch das wir dem Sänger bei frühen Konzerten, Radioauftritten und ersten Studioversuchen zuhören können. Er suggeriert eine private Begegnung mit Dylan in dieser Zeit des Aufbruchs, als sich Robert Zimmerman in Bob Dylan verwandelte
Als Archivrelease dokumentiert Dylans gesamte musikalische Metamorphose, vom Teenager-Rock'n'Roller zum Star der Folkszene im Greenwich Village. Dabei ist die schiere Fülle des Materials besonders eindrücklich 139 Tracks. Die acht CDs offenbaren bereits den jungen Zimmermann/Dylan als wahren Songster und lebende Jukebox der amerikanischen Musik. Er verkörpert schon hier das alternative amerikanische Songbook.
Die Aufnahmen stammen aus folgenden Quellen:

  1. Informelle Aufnahmen aus Privatbesitz (1956–1960): Die allerfrühesten Aufnahmen stammen nicht aus Studios, sondern sind Heim- und Party-Mitschnitte, als Dylan noch Robert Zimmerman hiess. Diese wurden oft mit einfachen Geräten bei Freunden oder Bekannten aufgenommen, zum Beispiel die früheste Aufnahme der Compilation, «Let the Good Times Roll» vom Heiligabend 1956. Diese Aufnahme, ein Cover von Shirley and Lee, entstand im Terlinde Music Shop in St. Paul, Minnesota, als Dylan 15 war. Sie ist für seine Biografie wichtig, weil sie zeigt, dass Dylan nicht zum Rock 'n' Roll kam als er im Juli 1965 begann, elektrisch zu spielen, sondern dass er von Anfang an von der Rock-Musik begeistert war.
    Weitere frühe Aufnahmen entstanden bei Freunden in Hibbing und Minneapolis (z.B. die «Informal Recordings» mit Jugendfreund Ric Kangas oder die Party-Aufnahmen von Minneapolis 1961/1962. Insgesamt dokumentieren diese informellen Aufnahmen die musikalische Entwicklung vom Rock’n’Roll-Fan zum Folk-Musiker.
  2. Live-Mitschnitte aus der Folk-Szene (1961–1963): Nach seinem Umzug nach New York City begann Dylan, intensiv in den kleinen Clubs des Greenwich Village aufzutreten. Dass diese Auftritte mitgeschnitten wurden, erstaunt vielleicht, aber offenbar wurden solche Club-Konzerte gerne von Tontechnikern, Freunden der Künstler oder von ambitionierten Sammlern auf Band aufgenommen, entweder zur Archivierung oder für private Sammlungen.
  3. Radioauftritte (ab 1961): Auch Aufnahmen von Radio- oder Fernsehauftritten sind Teil der Sammlung.
  4. Studio-Vaults von Columbia Records: Nachdem Dylan 1961 bei Columbia Records unterzeichnet hatte, begann er mit den Aufnahmen zu seinen ersten drei Alben. Davon sind hier Outtakes und alternative Versionen zu hören. Sie stammen aus den Columbia-Archiven.
  5. Professionelle Live-Aufnahmen: Die Deluxe-Ausgabe enthält als Highlight den kompletten, bisher unveröffentlichten Mitschnitt seines Auftritts in der Carnegie Hall vom 26. Oktober 1963. Dieses Konzert war ein wichtiger Meilenstein in seiner frühen Karriere und wurde professionell aufgenommen.
Nach wie vor beschäftigt mich das Bild des «offenen Fensters» im Titel der Compilation. Es suggeriert einen beiläufigen Einblick in Dylans privates Experimentieren und Üben – als ob wir zufällig ein unverschlossenes Fenster zur Vergangenheit finden. Doch diese Metapher ist irreführend. Die Wahrheit über diese Song-Sammlung enthüllt etwas Anderes: Bob Dylan gehörte zur ersten Künstlergeneration, deren gesamte kreative Entwicklung – vom ersten Jugendakkord bis zum finalen Durchbruch – lückenlos auf privaten Tonbändern und Club-Mitschnitten dokumentiert werden konnte und auch wurde. Diese allgegenwärtige Aufnahmebereitschaft, das Wissen um die ständige Dokumentation, könnte unbewusst zu jener gesteigerten Dringlichkeit beigetragen haben, mit der er seine frühen Songs vortrug und die wir heute noch auf diesen Aufnahmen spüren können.
